Booking your first personal training session in Santa Monica can feel like a big step. Maybe you haven't trained in years. Maybe you've never set foot in a gym with a coach watching you. Maybe you tried a class once and left feeling lost. Whatever brought you here, I want to take the mystery out of that first hour so you can walk in relaxed and ready.
I've coached for more than ten years and worked with over 500 clients, and almost every one of them told me the same thing afterwards: it was nothing like they expected. Here is exactly how a first session works at ENVYS, and what a good first session should look like wherever you train.
Before you arrive
Most of the nerves come from not knowing what's coming, so let's start with the practical stuff.
Sessions are by appointment, so once you've booked, that hour is set aside for you. Every session is private and 1-on-1. You won't be dropped into a group, and you won't be sharing your coach with anyone else.
Wear something you can move in, bring training shoes and a water bottle, and eat something light an hour or two before if that's what you're used to. There are changing rooms on site, so coming straight from the office is fine. Parking is free for clients.
If you have an injury, a past surgery or anything your doctor has told you to be careful with, make a note of it. We'll talk about it at the start, and it shapes everything that follows.
The conversation comes first
The first part of your first personal training session in Santa Monica, or anywhere, should be a conversation, not a warm-up. A trainer who has you doing burpees in the first five minutes doesn't know enough about you yet to be coaching you.
I'll ask about:
- Your goal. Not just "lose weight" or "get fit", but what that actually looks like for you and why it matters now.
- Your training history. What you've done before, what you enjoyed, and what made you stop.
- Injuries and aches. Old and current, big and small.
- Your week. Work hours, commute, sleep, family. A plan that ignores your real life won't last.
- How you eat. No judgement. I just need a starting point.
This usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, and it's the most important part of the hour. Everything I program after this is built on what you tell me here.
The movement assessment
Next, we look at how you move. This isn't a fitness test and you can't fail it. I'm watching basic patterns: how you squat, hinge, push, pull, lunge and rotate, and how your hips, shoulders and spine move through those positions.
My background in sport and exercise science and my FRCms mobility certification mean I'm looking for the details that matter. Does one hip move differently from the other? Do your shoulders allow you to press overhead comfortably? Is your lower back doing work your hips should be doing?
These answers tell me where to start, what to load and what to leave alone for now. If something is painful, we stop and work around it. Anything that needs medical attention is a conversation for your doctor or physical therapist, and I'm happy to work alongside them.
Then you actually train
This is the part people worry about most, and it's usually the part they enjoy most.
Your first workout is pitched at your level, not mine. If you're a beginner, that might be bodyweight squats, a few kettlebell movements, some TRX rows and a simple carry. If you've trained before, we'll find your working weights on a couple of main lifts. Either way, I coach every rep, so you're never guessing whether you're doing it right.
You should finish feeling like you worked, not like you were punished. Being wrecked for four days after your first session doesn't make you fitter. It just makes you less likely to come back. The goal of session one is to show you what good training feels like and leave you wanting the next one.
If your goal is strength, you'll get a feel for how we build lifts week by week. If it's weight loss, you'll see how strength work and conditioning fit together with nutrition.
You leave with a plan
In the last few minutes, we talk through what I saw and what I'd recommend: how many sessions a week makes sense for your goal and schedule, what the first few weeks would focus on, and one or two nutrition habits worth starting straight away. I'm a Precision Nutrition Level 1 coach, so food is part of the plan from day one, but it's practical habits, not a crash diet.
There's no hard sell. You'll have a clear idea of what training with me would look like, and you decide whether it's right for you.
How to get the most from your first session
A few things that help:
- Be honest. About your fitness, your eating, your injuries and your schedule. I can only coach what I know about.
- Ask questions. Why this exercise? Why this weight? A good coach should be able to explain everything.
- Speak up if something feels wrong. Discomfort from effort is normal. Sharp or unusual pain is not.
- Don't try to impress me. Lift what you can control. We'll add weight quickly once your form is solid.
- Think about your schedule beforehand. Know which days and times you could realistically train each week.
Why the first session matters so much
The first session sets the tone for everything after it. If you leave confused, sore and unsure what you're working towards, the odds of sticking with it are low. If you leave knowing exactly where you're starting, what the plan is and why it fits you, consistency gets much easier. And consistency is what drives every body transformation I've coached.
That's why I don't treat the first hour as a sales meeting. It's the first real step of your program.
